Free radon test kits from lung cancer programs

Some lung cancer groups hand out radon kits. We found 11 programs in 10 states, plus a nationwide store. 10 are free. 9 were taking requests when we checked.

We checked these on October 1, 2026. Most run on grants and can run out. Check the official page before you order.

Who can get one: Every state except New Jersey.

How to get it: Pick your state in the store and order. The $18 short-term kit includes return postage and the lab fee. A long-term kit is $38.

Colorado

University of Colorado Cancer Center.

For households that need financial help, while supplies last.

Who can get one: Colorado residents who need financial help and live on a first or second floor. One kit per household.

How to get it: Fill out the form in English or Spanish and a long-term kit is mailed to you. Mail it back after 90 days. Return postage is included.

Who can get one: Any Florida resident, one kit per home.

How to get it: Fill out the request form and a kit is mailed to you. Start the test when it arrives and mail it back about 48 hours later.

There is no statewide list. Call your county first.

Who can get one: Only in counties that have kits, while supplies last.

How to get it: Call your county health department and ask for a free radon kit. If yours has none, the Lung Association store sells one for $18.

Iowa HHS cancer prevention program, with local public health departments.

Kits go out as they reach each county.

Who can get one: Homeowners living in their own home in rural Iowa, outside the Lung Association's county list.

How to get it: Fill out the request form. Your county health department contacts you when a kit is ready.

American Lung Association in Iowa, with Iowa HHS and the Iowa Cancer Consortium.

Only the counties listed, while supplies last.

Who can get one: Residents of Black Hawk, Boone, Dallas, Dubuque, Johnson, Linn, Polk, Pottawattamie, Scott, Story, Warren or Woodbury county. One kit per household per year.

How to get it: Answer three questions and type a short pledge on the form. A short-term kit comes with a postage-paid return envelope.
