Radon Test Kits in Colorado

CDPHE offers a free radon test kit, one per household per year, and says elevated radon shows up in about one of every two Colorado homes. Denver residents have a separate free order form while supplies last. Arapahoe County has its own free-kit request form. El Paso County sells a $15 short-term Air Chek test in Colorado Springs. Fort Collins sells a $6 short-term kit and a $20 long-term kit at the Senior Center. Boulder County names two sellers and does not list their prices.

The city says the EPA recommends fixing levels of 4 pCi/L or higher, and that about half of Fort Collins homes tested are at that level. A separate January 2026 Larimer County spotlight described free short-term pickups. That county page was not available when we checked on October 1, 2026, so those free pickups are not listed.

How to test, and what a result means

Place the kit the way its instructions say, and keep the house closed when the kit requires that. A short test is a screen. It is not the last word if your state wants a follow-up test.

How we check programs

Test your home. Then help someone else test theirs.

A reusable monitor does not have to stay in one house. After you have a reading you trust for your own home, you can lend it to a parent, an adult child, a coworker, a neighbor, or a friend.

Here is an example, not a sale price. If a roughly $100 monitor is eventually used by five households, the equipment cost works out to about $20 per household. Your real price will be whatever the maker charges that day.

Lending a monitor this way does not meet a professional test or a real estate requirement. When you move the device, follow the manufacturer's instructions and start a new measurement.
