Nebraska radon test kit guidance

Nebraska DHHS tells you to ask your local health department about free or reduced-cost kits. We have not verified an Omaha or Lincoln counter price.

Who it is for. Nebraska lets you test the home you live in without a license. Testing another property requires a DHHS-licensed tester.

DHHS does not list one statewide kit price. It says some local programs distribute kits for free or at a reduced cost, and it names commercial labs you can order from.

Contact your local health department, or order from a lab named on the DHHS test-kit page: AccuStar, Air Chek, Alpha Energy Laboratories, or RSSI. State radon office: (402) 471-1005 or (888) 242-1100.

The state radon page says the results of more than half of radon tests in Nebraska are above 4.0 pCi/L. Short-term tests on the kit page are described as 2 to 7 days. Long-term tests are described as 3 months to 1 year.

Lincoln-Lancaster radon testing guidance

Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department does not sell radon kits and does not test homes. It points you to store kits and to licensed contractors.

The health department says it does not sell radon test kits and does not perform radon testing. It says kits are sold at home improvement stores. No store price is listed.

Buy a kit at a home improvement store, or hire a private contractor. The department points you to the Nebraska DHHS radon page for licensed businesses. It recommends long-term tests of more than 90 days over short-term tests of 2 to 7 days.

The department says if a short-term test is above the EPA action level of 4.0 pCi/L, the EPA recommends a second short-term test. It says it can offer guidance if a long-term test, or two short-term tests, are above that level. No kit counter is listed, so there is no pin.

How to test, and what a result means

Place the kit the way its instructions say, and keep the house closed when the kit requires that. A short test is a screen. It is not the last word if your state wants a follow-up test.

How we check programs

Test your home. Then help someone else test theirs.

A reusable monitor does not have to stay in one house. After you have a reading you trust for your own home, you can lend it to a parent, an adult child, a coworker, a neighbor, or a friend.

Here is an example, not a sale price. If a roughly $100 monitor is eventually used by five households, the equipment cost works out to about $20 per household. Your real price will be whatever the maker charges that day.

Lending a monitor this way does not meet a professional test or a real estate requirement. When you move the device, follow the manufacturer's instructions and start a new measurement.
