This pin is the published office. It is not proof that a free kit is on the counter today. Hours were not on the center list we checked. Milwaukee and Racine do not have their own pages here, because we did not verify a pickup in those cities.

Wisconsin radon information centers

Wisconsin DHS points you to regional radon information centers. Many offer free or reduced-cost kits, and store kits are described as $10 to $30.

DHS says you can buy a kit for $10 to $30 online, at a hardware store, or through your regional center. It also says many centers provide kits for free or at a reduced cost. It does not promise that price at every center.

Use the regional center list, or buy a kit on your own.

DHS says levels above 4 pCi/L are high and a contractor can install a mitigation system. Center addresses are on the information-center page.

EPA radon zone

EPA classifies Waukesha County as Zone 1, its highest radon-potential category. Individual homes can vary, so testing is still the only way to know your home's level. The zone is not a claim that your house is high.

How to test, and what a result means

Place the kit the way its instructions say, and keep the house closed when the kit requires that. A short test is a screen. It is not the last word if your state wants a follow-up test.

How we check programs

Test your home. Then help someone else test theirs.

A reusable monitor does not have to stay in one house. After you have a reading you trust for your own home, you can lend it to a parent, an adult child, a coworker, a neighbor, or a friend.

Here is an example, not a sale price. If a roughly $100 monitor is eventually used by five households, the equipment cost works out to about $20 per household. Your real price will be whatever the maker charges that day.

Lending a monitor this way does not meet a professional test or a real estate requirement. When you move the device, follow the manufacturer's instructions and start a new measurement.
